File Transferring...
-
The left side of the WS_FTP window is your computer and its directories. The right side is the remote server's user directories. In the screen shot above, we are in the "Webmaster" directory. Find YOUR personal directory and double-click it. NOTE: it will be the directory name you gave us when you placed your order for web space. You may have to scroll to find it. You are now in your directory and ready to upload files. You will be able to see other directories on the server, as well as yours. However, you only have write permissions on yours. You can upload and delete files, make and delete directories as well as rename files, on the right side.
-
Make sure "Binary" is selected at the bottom of the window (not ASCII or L8).
-
Select the files on your computer to be transferred to your "root" directory and click the arrow button (-->). Look to the bottom of the WS_FTP window and you should see "226 transfer complete". This log window will tell you if you made a successful transfer or not. You may not see your file on the remote directory right after you transfer it, but this log window will tell you if the transfer was successful or not. And then the file should appear on the remote server(ftp.ij.net).
-
Once you have transferred all the files over to the server for this session, click on "Close" at the bottom to close the session.
-
Click on "Connect" if you want to connect again.
-
Click on "Exit" when you're finished. Go to Suggestions

As a general rule, it's a good idea to have
the files on your machine mirrored on the server. In other words,
it is easier to maintain and update a web site if it looks exactly
the same on both your pc and the server. This is a good habit to
get into. As your site grows, this will be an invaluable lesson
in site management.
-
If you want your URL to go to a default page,
make sure your first page (home page) is called
index.html. This is the only page that has to have the
four letter .html extension. All pages after index.html can have
the .htm extension.
-
Keep track of your filenames, especially those
with the extension ".htm" as opposed to ".html". Sometimes in
the transfer of ".html" files, the last "l" is dropped and the
files then have the extension ".htm". You can simply rename it
to the ".html" extension after it's transferred over.
-
It may be easier to double-click on files to be
transferred instead of using the arrow buttons.
